the argentinian based ngly had seemingly appeared out of thin air landing on the brooklyn based l.i.e.s. label in 2014 with an untitled four track white label ep. on this ep, the unsuspecting track -speechless tape- ended up becoming a cult hit with select djs in the scene (i-f, mick wills, intergalactic gary...) eventually leading to it being voted as intergalactic fm s #1 track of the year in 2014. on the heels of his successful debut rudolfo could have stayed the path and produced an easily digestable follow up dance record or two, instead he chose to take his time and reflect. sitting back in the studio tweaking his live act, recording endlessly, transforming and refining his sound.

why making a techno record in 2016? in the vast stream of new releases and the everlasting quest of new musical boundaries, blint002 tries to focus on the essentials of pattern-based clubmusic. both tracks started as late night studio jams, using only a drummaschine, a synth and some pedals. while 92 avenue ended up being a straightfoward technotrack, including a massive breakdown for everybody still awake and dancing, you have i dont have is incorporating some boomy hiphop aesthetic without loosing its connection to the dancefloor. both tracks are linked by their unresting synthlines, straying around, trapped in a noisey room full of smoke and distortion. bouncing back to the inital question, the answer with this record seems pretty clear: techno is still nothing but pure dark fun.

washington, dc native joe quarterman had his first hit in 1973, an instant funk classic that was part of the capital city’s red hot 70s funk scene. “so much trouble on my mind” is a party rocking anthem still being sampled and played over 40 years later. fort knox five recently got quarterman back in the studio to record a new song, the stripped down funk banger “don’t go”.

for over five years, all day i dream has been where deep and emotive meet house music. propelled by a community of forward thinking artists drawn around the scion of master curator and sunset/sunrise set specialist, lee burridge. all day i dream formally welcomes lost desert to the label with the release of lingala, a two-track collaborative effort with burridge himself, that also features junior on vocals. lost desert was picked out of obscurity after burridge discovered his music while trekking in a remote area of a long lost land. a fast forged friendship inevitably lead to the studio, and lingala’s the enrapturing sophomore result. the duo’s first project together debuted on lee’s night time imprint, get weird, earlier this year to widespread support. lingala, is a beautifully composed ten-minute sonic journey. built around a mystical lead vocal sung by newcomer junior in his native linagles the raw emotion slowly builds in intensity over propulsive basslines and deep melodic grooves . gorje hewek & izhevski’s interpretation of lingala is a markedly different affair. focussing on musical layers rather than the vocal the duo’s signature spacey atmospheres and minimal rhythmic percussion add extra strings creating uplifting moments that contrast the original’s mood.

after “theory of strings (part1)” ennio colaci and fabio della torre present the second part! the first track of a-side is the one who gives the title to the whole project, - theory of strings-, a dubby groover with a funky and psychedelic feel in the vein of a more coloured and dirtier studio 1 or soundhack. the -feeling good vibe- keeps going relaxed and chill with the smart up and down mood of the track -forty degrees- while on b side minimono get drier, minimalistic and more mysterious with the subtle after-hour jam of rewind. this strong effort by fabio and ennio ends trough the cinematic atmosphere and the romantic piano notes of the gentle but raw closing act -still mine-. mind the strings!

four never before released or publicly available demo cuts from the writing sessions of craig peyton and jolyon skinner circa 1983-1985. the duo produced and wrote hits for artists in between working on their own projects. these songs survived the past 30 years on a cassette tape, which was lovingly transferred for this exclusive to peyton records release. after their short but fruitful collaborative period, peyton went on as a writer and band leader and skinner went on to have a career as a songwriter for pop acts such as joe, nsync, and freddie jackson. in the words of craig peyton: “jolyon skinner and i met in the early ’80s through our mutual friend keith diamond (the trinidadian producer of hits such as “caribbean queen” by billy ocean). after we met, jolyon and i started regular writing sessions at my nyc p-factor studio. our first break came in 1983 with howard johnson’s “let this dream be real-. that was followed up with “love of a lifetime” by melba moore and “where ya gonna be tonight” for will collins. after this we were offered a recording deal by april blackwood music, but due to my contract with profile records at the time we couldn’t accept it. shortly after skinner got signed to zomba and we stopped writing together around 1985.

the first release by parisian iconoclast joakim for his friends and european colleagues at dj tennis life and death records is a miniature nocturne for dance floor meditation, a cascade of unfurling fizzy moods and introspection, finally tuned and expertly rendered by the electronic music maestro. -i met manfredi (tennis) through luke jenner (ex the rapture) in nyc. when manfredi has a few days off his busy touring schedule, he comes to my studio to work with luke on their collaboration project. we usually talk about synths, food, dj gossip and complain about espressos in nyc. about 6 months ago we were eating korean fried chicken and manfredi asked me if i’d like to do something for his label life & death. at the time i had a bunch of club tunes i started working on and somehow had a feeling some of them could be a fit for life & death so i played those and manfredi very quickly picked one, daemon. i thought putting out something on life & death was at the same time kind of odd (and if you didnt notice yet, i like when things are unexpected) and totally appropriat

the second release on tb arthurs (312) label finds the mysterious artist revealing a collaborative project with magda as blotter trax. the pair first encountered each other at the famous motor city record store record time, when detroit artist bmg introduced his then co-workers magda and derek plaslaiko to arthur, who was visiting the shop from chicago. sometime after that meeting, magda and arthur went into the studio and jammed together for a week, the session was recorded live on analog 1/4 tape and then three tracks were selected for release. 1a is six and a half minutes of modulated synth sounds that are psyched out and sci-fi, spooky and truly atmospheric. full of cerebral cinematism, acid lines and ghoulish textures all add up to a truly standout track. 2a then marries dark wave pops and clicks, unsettling alien lifeforms and menacing, slo motion industrial drums into a physical and imposing groover riddled with paranoid sirens and drones. last of all, 2b snakes and slithers its way through undulating drums, cosmic freakiness and gloopy synth sounds that are all seductive and subversive in equal measure. this, then, is a truly fascinating pairing.
